<< for detailed introduction (recommend)
We rebranded the RISD Writing Center as the RISD Communication Center (RISD CC) in order to:
1. Promote the public speaking and visual communication resources that are currently underutilized. Additionally, to inform foreign speakers of available resources that target their speaking problems.
2. Expand the speaking resources to address the problems of non-native speakers and prepare them to face the realistic reaction of speaking broken English to native speakers, without giving them false encouragement.

curation book of foot-binding shoes
all the images come from google
<< for detailed introduction
"Lotus Feet" refers to the bound feet which is deeply associated with woman in Chinese culture. The practice of foot binding required young girls tightly bind their feet in order to keep the feet in abnormally small size, which displaying the wealth of family by indicating that the women did not need to labor with their feet. From Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdom period to Qing Dynasty, foot binding gradually formed a complex "Fashion" system: shoes for bound feet were designed with multiple styles and different materials, just as various as the western shoes industry today. And the unique "aesthetics" of foot binding was formed, too -- women valued their lotus feet and was proud of their tiny size, even though behind the feet there were pain and blood.
This little book mimic the form of fashion catalogues that we use today, introducing multiple styles of shoes for bound feet and comparing them to the modern shoes styles. A movable "model" page is also provided in this catalogue to suit every shoes on. Fashionable, elegant, adorable...there are tons of praises could be used to describe these crafted shoes.
However, once the exquisite shoes are taken off......
It's your tea Time
RISD 2015 Design Studio 3, with Jacek Mrowczyk
<< for detail introduction
This project presents the most popular five teas among Cantonese people, which are Puer, Iron Godress of Mercy, Golden Beautiful Eyebrow, Dragon Well, and White Hair Silver Needle, and discusses the consuetudinary TIME for drinking, in the aspect of both the time in a day and the time in a year, as well as the reason behind it by branding and packaging. According to how Chinese people categorized everything in the world in to Yin and Yang and five elements, the internal quality of things can be also decided into warmth and cool, so does Cantonese Tea. In order to show the internal qualities and the effect of these qualities, a set of icons are applied in every facet of the packaging. The background image of each tea packaging are based on the most proper time in a day to drink the tea as well as the best season, providing a direct visual information of different tea. The tea cake is placed inside the triangular packaging, and the traditional way of wrapping the tea cake is kept in this design.
The Product book, just like the packaging, is very flexible and sculptural. It can be read from different directions. Inside the book, the traditional Cantonese tea culture is introduced, and the detailed information of each kind of tea is provided.

Original Text
Design is nothing. Design exists only as a substance in between. It is like a lubricant facilitating the transfer of something (a message, information, a product, a story) to someone or something else. At its worst, design is merely a handmaid, a servant, the pretty escort in this transfer. At its best, design is the scout, out in front, making decisions, solving problems, and bravely guiding its audience (and the client, if there is one) to new visions and Sometimes this happens in a veryinsights. teeny, small and restricted way. Sometimes it happens on a grander scale or in a more expressionistic way. I am always searching for those moments because it is then that design is something.

In this book, I set my sight on Morrison’s most representative work Beloved, which has a powerful depiction of family relationships and Mann’s At Twelve, Immediate Family, and Proud Flesh, which are based on Mann’s own family and others. In each spread, I picked an excerpt from Beloved and a piece of Mann’s work which has a corresponding relationship with the selected paragraph. Sometimes they share a same topic, sometimes they echo a same sentiment or atmosphere, and sometimes they introduce a co-responsive attitude to the same issue.
All the excerpts are presented in the original order. My own interpretation of those pieces are recorded as the footnotes.
